Count Mikes Estate, Transylvania, Romania

This splendid Romanian castle set in beautiful forest at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains is a perfect, family-friendly retreat at any time of year
By Harper’s BAZAAR UK and None

It was neglected during the years of Communist rule, but has been returned to the family of Count Mikes de Zabola. Income from the guesthouse – set in a 16th-century outbuilding – is helping to regenerate the estate. Family-friendly, with six large, airy, comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms, and welcoming living and dining rooms, this is a perfect retreat at any time of year. All rooms look onto the park; make the most of idyllic walks, bear-watching expeditions and sleigh rides and ice-skating in winter.
